We’ve had a bit of an adventure lately and I’ve been focused on things other than writing, blogging or anything creative. I’m dealing with my dog and he’s dealing with a cone and a tail that looks like it should be pinned on a donkey. Those of us who have dealt with a big dog in a cone know this is all consuming.

Chester is currently drugged to the eyeballs but Still able to give me the stink eye – I have done this thing to him. I am a mean mom – I keep driving him to the animal hospital where people in white coats hurt him and send him home in a clown collar.

Chester thought we had a deal – I promised I wouldn’t sign him up for another surgery and he vowed to try to stay out of trouble. This last venture under the knife was unexpected and unavoidable. He had a lump on his tail – not a large lump but a lump that wasn’t going away – it wasn’t hindering the wagging of said tale but it was growing. Being a conscientious dog mom I took the dog and his lump to the vet. A needle biopsy revealed the lump was bad news and had to go.

Apparently tails are tricky – thankfully Chester has an amazing vet, one who has saved his bacon on more than one occasion – this time he was tasked with saving Chester’s tail.

The surgery went as well as could be expected, the lump was removed, the tail bandaged and the dog coned. He was discharged and sent home for me to care for and cope with. It’s been a lot.

The lump was sent away to explain itself. A pathology report confirmed it was a mast cell tumor. Most of the tumor has been removed, which is really good news. The bad news is the good news makes little difference to Chester – he is done of the cone, the bandage and the constant supervision. I am relieved he is going to live to tell the tale but I too am done of the cone, the bandage and the constant supervision.

We’ve had a few setbacks over the past two weeks but are currently embarking on the road to recovery. Chester’s tale will wag again and I will get back to some sense of normal one of these days – I may even return to blogging.

The many attempts to increase the effectiveness of the cone – Chester is very limber and this is a challenge.

Poor Chester. I can imagine, big dog, big cone, slam, bang, ouch. Chester may hate it right now, but when it’s off his memory will drift and you will be forgiven and he will be back to the regular Chester.
