Island holiday – diary post 2. Mudge Moments

There is a quiet here that settles your bones, broken only with the sound of a seal slap on the water or the groc of a heron fishing off a rock. And the coffee tastes amazing. A girl could get used to this. Sure didn’t take long to fall into Mudge mode.

The flight over was awesome, Indiana Jones has nothing on me anymore, save perhaps a better execution of a whip. The small floatplane, a Beaver probably built in the fifties, oomphed its cargo off the river like a giant bird that seemed to surprise itself. The engine screamed and the pontoons sliced the water until suddenly they didn’t and the world fell away. We were flying.

I’ve always loved the view of the planet from the window of a plane – it takes my breath away.

This morning I have a front row view of the narrows between Mudge and Gabriola islands. The sandstone shore line is littered with driftwood and sea life. I’m being serenaded by seagulls and a tiny squirrel is chirping the headlines — apparently there is much happening in his world. My world is settled somewhere in yesterday and I am living the moment on Mudge.

My granddaughter was tasked with showing her Papa and I the ropes – she has taken this task seriously and there are a lot of ropes to learn. She helped me select a life jacket to wear on our short buzz across the narrows ( I got the one that matches hers). She showed me how to climb into the box of a pickup truck and where to sit for the 98 yard journey from the mooring place to the cabin. She took me on an adventure down the beach to “Too Far Point” – (I get a vision of her father pointing to the out crop of rock and telling her ‘that’s too far). All before supper time yesterday.

You can really milk a moment on Mudge – turn a minute into an hour with ease. Watching the water twinkle is like staring at a campfire – you can feel your face relax and the lull of the quiet softly whispers the moment. This is a far cry from roughing it – this is the life.

We are being treated like royalty – the food is amazing. Everything tastes better marinated in sea air. The stars last night put on an extraordinary display – even the Milky Way winked in the distance.

The day lays before us like a red carpet down to the beach. My hurry mode has been put on pause, my hustle on mute. I am open for the story of today. It will reveal itself in the moments on Mudge.

OMG…… you make me smile. I think it has been too long since you got to be this person. So happy for you!
