So, Lord Stanley’s cup is heading back to Pittsburgh; the Penguins scooped it again. I’m a little sad for Nashville – they tried so hard; the players and fans showed up for the series in a fashion that did the sport proud.
I have to point out that at my heart I am a Canucks fan first – I mean, I live on the coast and Vancouver’s my team. When our boys didn’t make the playoffs this year I moved my loyalty to the next Canadian team of my heart (at this point I can’t even remember which team that was). Any hockey loving Canadian would do the same – watching a game isn’t nearly as much fun if you are not totally invested in one of the teams.
When the Ottawa Senators lost in their game seven to Pittsburgh I was left to choose an American team on which I could pin my heart. No loyal fan could possibly choose to jump on the bandwagon of the team who just ousted your favorite Canadian competitor ever – so I chose the Predators. I’m a lover of underdogs and a fan of country western music. The choice was a natural one – there was a possibility Garth Brooks could be spotted in a crowd panning shot during some of the games (hockey AND Garth? Who could resist?)
Anyway…. my husband and I glued ourselves to the television and cheered for the boys (our new favorites) with gusto. The entertainment value of a good hockey game can’t be under rated. It was a great series! We held our breath, chewed our nails and berated bad calls like the loyal, bandwagon jumping fans we were.
But for all that effort our new favorites lost. I guess we will have to take heart that Sid the Kid hails from Nova Scotia…. Yay! A Canadian superstar is hoisting the Stanley Cup — does it get better than that??

You know how I feel about sports… but this, as always, is beautifully written.
Thank you Lois. Getting back to writing feels good but also terrifying – I hold my breath every time I post. Thanks for the gentle words.
Sid the kid is ‘da man!’
Great story 🙂
