Giving thanks on Thanksgiving

I am thankful for Thanksgiving. Thankful that giving thanks merits an official holiday. Thankful the day inspires a heartfelt inventory of all things good in our lives. And thankful that all this thankfulness warrants a turkey dinner.

I would like to think I am a grateful person – I quietly whisper a thank you often. Mostly when I’m particularly moved or relieved, but often times just because – because I am thankful. I think gratitude should be a prerequisite for waking up in the morning – we are blessed just because we ‘are’.

The older I get the more grateful I am. My life is full of blessings. I think this is one of the gifts of aging – this sense of appreciation. The more mortal I feel the more thankful I am.

I have been blessed since the moment of my conception. I did nothing to warrant the ‘where’ I was born nor the family I was born into – this was pure luck. I know no hardship, hunger or hate and for this I am thankful. The universe gifted these blessings to my children as well, and those children to me. My heart doesn’t feel big enough to hold all the love I feel for the people in my life. I found my perfect partner on the very first try and have been grateful for him for almost forty years. The family of friends I have accumulated over years has enriched my life to no end. I am blessed on so many levels it sometimes makes my head spin.

Today I am healthy. I am warm and dry – well fed and well cared for. I am loved and I love. I am blessed.

So I’m giving thanks; thanks on Thanksgiving – thanks on every day.

Happy Thanksgiving.
