Last Thursday was the final episode of ‘Paw Prints On my Heart’ – the nine post series about the dogs of my past. It felt good to write about each of these friends, to revisit our time together. I’m glad to have their stories up on ‘the cloud’ (wherever that is) – glad that they won’t be overlooked when someone in the future stumbles upon my musings. They are now documented.
I’m not sure how this ‘cloud’ storage thing actually works – I have visions of miniature celestial beings labeling and sorting files. I’d like to think my work warrants a drawer unto itself, and that the little beings look forward to my next submission. It’s comforting to imagine my words are being received with enthusiasm, but it’s also ridiculous. I know there are no miniature file clerks. How cloud storage really works really doesn’t matter.
I pay for extra real estate on the cloud every month – I have no clue how much space I actually rent. If the words are stacked they probably don’t take up as much room as they would if they store them by the line. I’m not sure if I’m buying cubic meters or kilometers, but it’s reassuring to know that all my work is being backed up and protected from physical harm.
So, that being said, I have a new brilliant idea, maybe.
All of my old work is scattered in various places; I have a book of tearsheets, essays included in several anthologies and a number of actual file folders containing stories I wrote years ago. I no longer have the computer I wrote those stories on and never thought to back things up on an external memory card. So…. I thought I would participate in Throw-back Thursday by posting previously published pieces on this blog. This way all my old work could make its way up to the cloud to be included in my collection of musings. A one stop shop of all of Elva’s brilliant thoughts on life in my particular fast lane.
Some of my old essays have already appeared on the blog, my intent was to try to link an old story to a new one and thus sneak the old one onto the cloud. My throw back Thursday will be an honest ‘throw it up there’ post so the old stories can mingle with the new. I am, after all, renting considerable outer space – may as well fill it up.
next week, Throw Back Thursday, Grammaniaonline.com style.
